Self-Care as a Dietitian in Private Practice
A common theme is coming up with our Pursuing Private Practice community: Many business owners do not feel like have enough space for self-care.
No matter what stage of business you’re in, you find yourself juggling multiple tasks, making critical decisions, seeing your clients, and balancing the needs of the business. Sometimes “external success” doesn’t feel so successful because you don’t attend to your own well-being. All of the “external success” cannot make up for a lack of “internal success”.
Prioritizing your physical, mental, and emotional health is not only essential for your personal well-being but also critical for the success of your business.
- Set clear boundaries
Define specific working hours and stick to them as much as possible. Communicate these boundaries to your team and encourage them to respect your personal time.
- Delegate and empower your team
Delegate responsibilities to capable team members, trust their abilities, and empower them to make decisions. If you don’t have a team yet, what form of support can you ask for to make your workload easier?
- Prioritize tasks
Identify the most important and urgent tasks for your life and business and learn to actively delete (or delay) the tasks that can be postponed. This will help you manage your time effectively and lower your stress.
- Schedule regular breaks
It’s essential to take breaks throughout the day to recharge, but also important to block off a longer amount of time to fully relax and rejuvenate. This could range from a real break for lunch, or even a full week off sometime this summer.
- Find your business besties
Find the people that can laugh with you, cry with you, vent with you, and also cheer you on. Surround yourself with a network of others who can offer guidance, but also appreciate what you have to give as well.
- Prioritize self-care activities
What can you do today to promote your physical and mental well-being? It might mean getting enough sleep, planning a walk, or making plans with a friend. When we are well taken care of, we have the ability to care for others.
- Seek out a coach
No matter what you’re going through, there will always be someone that can support you. A coach has insight and experience to help you navigate challenges and maintain a healthy perspective.
- Disconnect from work
Set aside dedicated time to disconnect from work and business completely. Turn off email notifications, avoid checking work-related messages, and plan events or activities that help you relax and recharge. It’s essential to create boundaries and allow yourself to fully unwind.
- Practice mindfulness and stress management
Incorporate mindfulness techniques like meditation, deep breathing exercises, or yoga into your routine. These practices can help you manage stress, improve focus, and enhance overall well-being.
- Reflect upon your own self-care practices and consider areas where you can make improvements
It could be as simple as allocating time each week to look at this list and pick 1 area to focus on!
Remember, self-care is not selfish; it is an investment in our personal and professional growth.
