Boundaries in Business: How to Set, Evaluate, & Make Changes to Your Boundaries to Protect Your Peace

Boundaries in business are crucial for maintaining sanity, ensuring productivity, and protecting your peace.

Has there ever been a time you’ve failed to stick to your boundaries? Have you ever let a client not abide by your cancellation policy, or schedule when you don’t typically work? What about scrolling on social media instead of planning out your own marketing?

As business owners, especially in the healthcare field, we often prioritize other people’s needs over our own, leading to burnout and dissatisfaction. Establishing and maintaining clear boundaries is key to a sustainable and fulfilling practice.

Why are Boundaries in Business Important?

Boundaries define the limits of your professional responsibilities and protect your personal well-being.

Without clear boundaries, you risk overcommitting, experiencing burnout, and ultimately, compromising the quality of care you provide.

Boundaries help you create a balanced life, ensuring you have the time and energy to devote to your personal and professional goals.

How to Set Boundaries

Setting boundaries may sound like an easy thing to do, but it can feel really uncomfortable, especially if you’re not used to it.

It begins with self-awareness. You have to identify what you need to feel balanced and fulfilled in your work and personal life. Here are some steps to help you effectively set boundaries:

  1. Reflect on Your Needs: Consider what drains your energy and what activities replenish it.
  2. Communicate Clearly: This can be the tricky part. Be directive and assertive when expressing your boundaries to clients, colleagues, and even family members. Remember to be respectful and compassionate.
  3. Evolve: Boundaries and constantly evolving, and that’s okay. At different times in life and business, you’re going to need different things.

We have an entire section devoted to boundaries in our business coaching program, Business School! This transformative program includes education, connection, support, and accountability to help you take up space and become the business owner you were meant to be, according to your boundaries.

Examples of Boundaries in Business

You truly can have boundaries for so many things. Here are some examples to get you thinking about what you may need:

Time Management: Define specific work hours and stick to them. Don’t work nights and don’t work weekends if that’s what you desire.

Client interaction: Set clear guidelines for communication, such as response times for emails and availability for appointments.

Cancellation Policy: You need a cancellation policy in private practice, and it’s important that you actually stick to it.

CEO Time: Plan time in your schedule that’s for CEO tasks. You need this time to work on big-picture goals and run your business.

How to Evaluate Boundaries & Make Changes

Regularly assessing your boundaries is crucial to ensure they continue to serve you. As you change, so do your boundaries. Here’s how to evaluate and adjust them:

  1. Reflect: Are your current boundaries serving you? Do you feel stressed or overwhelmed?
  2. Solicit Feedback: Ask your business friends for their perspective on your boundaries. Sometimes, other people see things that you’re not seeing.
  3. Make adjustments: Don’t be afraid to change your boundaries when they’re no longer effective. Flexibility is key, but make sure you continue to communicate these changes.

Self-Care Needs to be a Priority

Self-care needs to be a non-negotiable boundary. It’s not just about taking breaks but engaging in activities that truly nurture your well-being.

Whether it’s a daily walk, meditation, or simply putting your phone away for a while, self-care helps you recharge and stay focused.

Find Your Business Friends

My number 1 tip for success in business is to find your business friends. Your environment is everything and your support squad will be so influential to your success.

I don’t mean this in a toxic positivity way either. Your business friends will challenge you to step outside your comfort zone, evolve your boundaries, and call you out when you’re not taking care of yourself.

You Can’t See What You Don’t Believe

It’s important to surround yourself with others who are doing incredible work in the way that you want to do it.

A mindset shift I had recently was that other people have done what I want to do in business. That means there is a way to do it and I just have to find out how to get there in a way that works for me.

Look at the Big Picture

When setting and maintaining boundaries, always keep the big picture in mind. Boundaries are not about limiting your potential but about creating a sustainable path to achieve your long-term goals.

They help you maintain focus, preserve your energy, and stay aligned with your vision for your business and life.

Boundaries in Business: The Takeaway

Establishing, evaluating, and adjusting boundaries is crucial for maintaining your peace and ensuring long-term success in business.

By prioritizing self-care, seeking support from business friends, and keeping the big picture in mind, you can create a balanced and fulfilling professional life. Remember, boundaries are not barriers but bridges to a healthier, more productive life and business.

And never forget, you deserve to take up space in business.
