Transform Your Business with Dietitian Supervision

Transform Your Business with Dietitian Supervision

Dietitian supervision is commonly known to support dietitians in enhancing clinical skills, increasing their knowledge about medical nutrition therapy, and gaining confidence in working with clients, their caregivers, and their treatment teams. This is an important part of growing a private practice.

However, supervision can be so much deeper than just education. How are you, really?

The world is full of chaos, our clients have been through trauma, and we’re all feeling extra stress right now.

Supervision can help us process our feelings, gain insight into transference and countertransference, and provide a reflective space to ask challenging questions.

In today’s blog, I’ll be discussing what supervision is, why it’s important, and 3 lessons I’ve learned from seeking out supervision in my dietitian private practice.

What is Dietitian Supervision?

Entrepreneurship can be lonely – but it doesn’t have to be.

Supervision for private practice professionals is a process of professional support and learning, so you don’t have to do business alone.

It generally includes regular meetings between a supervisor and a private practice professional to talk about client cases, professional issues, personal development, boundaries, and so much more. It can look different for everyone, but here are some key components:

  1. Support and Guidance: Supervisors offer a safe space for dietitians to work through difficult situations in business. They offer specific feedback and insights into nutrition counseling techniques and approaches.
  2. Skill Development: Supervisors can help business owners to identify their strengths and areas for improvement. They can provide ongoing learning to ensure you’re staying up to date with the latest science and counseling methods.
  3. Personal Growth: Supervision is so important in understanding your own biases and how they may impact your work with your clients. As you get supervision, you can begin to develop a stronger sense of your professional identity and gain confidence in your role.

Dietitian supervision is so much more than clinical and counseling support, it’s about growing and developing into the best version of yourself as a business owner. It will help you take up space in business.

There Will Be Situations Where You Need Supervision

Having a private practice comes with a lot of benefits. More freedom than a “typical” job, more money, more flexibility, and also more impact: Hearing about client wins, witnessing the behavior change, noticing a difference in someone’s personality because something just “clicked.” Honestly, this makes working with clients worth it.

To get to those epic moments though we often have to work through some situations that feel uncomfortable. You know, those situations that make you cringe inside. Here are a few examples:

  • A client canceled at the last minute and you don’t know if you should charge the cancellation fee.
  • A client was angry at you during a session.
  • A client cried all throughout their first session and then emailed you saying “I’m fine and not coming back for another session.”
  • A client told you they couldn’t afford to see you every week and then told you about their upcoming three-week European vacation.
  • A client asked you if you ever had an eating disorder (this happened to me when I was very newly recovered.)
  • A client referred their sibling to your practice

These things can make you go, “Hmmm.” I’m sure you can add to this list with a few of your own.

Have these ever happened to you? I bet you thought, man, it would be nice if I had someone to talk this through with and bounce ideas off of.

Why is Supervision as a Dietitian so Important?

The situations mentioned above are why dietitian supervision is so important.

Supervision is common in the mental health professions (and thankfully becoming more common for dietitians). It helps you work through what you’re feeling in sessions with clients.

Having supervision gives you a “safety net” to know that you’re doing the best thing for your client. And, it allows you to bounce things off others and talk through difficult situations and challenges.

I was able to bring all the issues above to supervision. It is empowering and confidence-building.

When I started having supervision calls, I had no idea that one of the biggest benefits would be the ability to think about my boundaries in a different way. It was through supervision that I learned how to set boundaries that align with my values.

Throughout my years of receiving supervision, I’ve learned so many valuable lessons that I’d like to pass on, so you don’t have to go through the same difficult situations I did.

Lessons I’ve Learned from Supervision #1:  Not Charging Clients According to My Cancellation Policy

First, it took me a full year in private practice to even have a cancellation policy. After I created one, I had a hard time enforcing my 48-hour cancellation policy.

If clients gave 2 hours’ notice, I would let the cancellation fee slide. This went on until I received supervision. I’m not proud, but admit it to share my learning lessons!

In supervision, I realized that I was holding resentment toward these clients. I truly didn’t like working with them because my boundaries were being crossed.

But as a supervisor asked me, “what have you done to communicate your boundary?” The answer was honestly “I have done nothing!”

The session went on to help me process why communicating boundaries was hard for me and how people-pleasing was showing up in business. I still remember that session and how impactful it was.

Lessons I’ve Learned from Supervision #2: Letting My Ego Get in the Way

Fast forward a few years later I had a group practice with other dietitians. But I still had a hard time letting go of the idea of “my practice” and transitioning my business over to a business brand.

I wanted to build my business as a group and lead a team of dietitians to support clients. I was honestly stressed from having so many referrals call me and say “my client can only work with you”, but my schedule was packed and I didn’t have any more room left to see more clients.

Supervision helped me see how I was responding to my ego, rather than my values. It was truly very uncomfortable to “let go” but it was the best thing I ever could have done to build a scalable business.

After all, one person can not (and should not!) be “the best” at everything in any business. Support and teamwork are key to building a business and I learned this in supervision.

Lessons I’ve Learned from Supervision #3: Consistency in Client Care is Up to Me

I remember complaining to a supervisor about how sometimes my sickest clients only wanted to see me once a month.

It was so challenging because I wasn’t charging enough back then AND I was spending a lot of extra time coordinating their care and receiving updates when I hadn’t even seen them for a session. Sometimes I would talk about how frustrating it felt to be working so hard.

A supervisor asked, “are you working harder than the client?”. My answer was “of course I am!”. And then she asked, “why?”

This was yet another powerful session for me to reflect on why I felt the need to be “fixing” clients and why I was working so hard.

I realized that I wasn’t enforcing my own boundaries and because of this, I wasn’t able to do my best work as a clinician. A lot of challenging conversations about the importance of weekly sessions happened after that supervision session.

Supervision Makes You a Better Business Owner

Supervision isn’t just about improving your clinical and counseling skills, it also helps shape you into a better person.

It makes you better at developing boundaries, prioritizing self-care, and making mindset shifts.

Investing in dietitian supervision is well worth the investment. When a client schedules a couple of more sessions with you, you’ll be on your way to cover the cost of investing in you and your business.

Every session you continue to schedule after supervision increases your ROI, not to mention the increased confidence you’ll have in these sessions.

Transform Your Business with Dietitian Supervision: The Takeaway

Dietitian supervision is more than just a tool for enhancing your clinical skills – it’s a step you’re taking to develop yourself personally and professionally.

Supervision provides you a space to process complex situations and emotions. It empowers you to run your business in a way that aligns with your values.

By investing in supervision, you’re investing in yourself and your business. Through my personal supervision experience, I’ve had ah-ha moments, breakthroughs, and I’ve been given advice that I still use today.

So, if you’re hesitating to seek supervision, consider this your sign to take the leap. Your future self—and your business—will thank you.
