Home Organization: How to Run Your Home Like a CEO
You are the CEO of your home. If you don’t feel like it yet, don’t worry, I’ve got you! Read today’s blog to understand how to feel confident in being the CEO of your home.
In today’s home organization blog, we’ll be covering 3 pillars to run your home like a CEO:
- Mindset shifts
- Organizing your systems & methods
- Intuitive living
Home and Business are Connected
Here at Pursuing Private Practice, we believe that anyone who owns a business is a CEO, whether you’re a solopreneur or have a team of 10!
Just like in business, we also believe that you are the CEO of your home. Whether you’re living with your parent or family, rent your own space, have kids of your own, and/or are the main caregiver to another person, you have a lot to manage! This means you are the CEO of your home (and of your life!)
We recognize that many of us juggle multiple roles and responsibilities at work and home.
Because of this, we’ve created a blog designed to equip you with the skills and strategies needed to effectively manage your household like the empowering CEO you are!
The SPACE Method
At Pursuing Private Practice, we have a systemized approach to making changes – whether it’s at home or in business, we follow the SPACE method.
See: Before making a decision, gather insight with neutral emotions, simply gather information.
Prep: Prepare in a way that works for you, write down an action plan, organize your thoughts, whatever you need.
Action: Make your decision then actually do it and see if you get different results.
Confidence: This is what happens when you take action.
Evaluate: Having neutral emotions again, evaluate if it worked or if it didn’t.
As you read through this home organization blog, remember the SPACE method to help you take actionable steps to improve your home life.
Mindset Shifts
When running your home, don’t be afraid to make changes to your values and mindset. Sometimes, the best thing you can do is take a step back, gain a new perspective, and try again.
To run your home like a CEO, PPP has developed 3 areas you can work on mindset shifts:
- Brain Health: You need to understand how your brain influences your home. It’s important to take care of yourself, go to therapy, and know that your brain is connected to your home.
Tip: Work with your personality, go to therapy
- Use Your Values: Reflect on your values and use them to make changes in your ideal week. Understand that there are no bad values! Money is a value, and it’s okay to want to make more money. Some more examples include:
- Connection
- Aesthetics
- Having an office space
- Creativity
- Flexibility
- Balance
- Sustainability
- Support
Tip: List out your values
3. Treat Your Home Right: Treat your home the way it deserves to be treated. Your environment impacts you more than you know, so it’s important to take care of the things around you.
Tip: When you take care of your home, your home serves you
Organizing Your Systems and Methods
In this home organization blog, we of course have to talk about how systems in your home can help you automate your life and save you time. Don’t be afraid to set up systems, it can take some time in the beginning, but it will save you so much time in the end.
Home systems can include folders, digital links, meal prep, password sharing, Alexa, and online banking. Even your cell phone can be a system that benefits you!
Here’s a list of my favorite home systems, and how I make them work in my life. Your systems don’t have to look exactly like mine, but you can use these for inspiration.
- Folders: I have a location in my home where I keep all of my labeled folders with important information for running my home. I keep medical information, important car documents, business cards, and more in this location. I also have a safe where I keep the more important documents like birth certificates and sensitive information.
- Medical: My medical systems include taking the time to set up online portals, so I can have all my medical information online in one place.
- Errands: I use Instacart to shop. Taking 3 kids grocery shopping typically ends with me spending more money than I planned to and meltdowns in the store. For me, the extra fees with Instacart are worth it. When it comes to shopping, I also like to prioritize shopping locally, but I understand that I need to protect my energy and boundaries, and sometimes that means ordering something from Target or Amazon last minute.
- Meal prep: A lot of dietitians love meal prepping, but not me! However, I understand that it’s important to make weeknights easier, so I prioritize spending some time on Sundays planning out meals and prepping and freezing a few things. I also take advantage of local family-style dinner takeout options, and sometimes, we just have breakfast for dinner!
- Finances and Budgeting: It’s important to know how much income you need to run your life. And that means planning for surprises. You don’t need to know every single dollar you spend, but it’s good to have a general idea about how much you’re spending. I like to use PPP’s Business School finance template.
Intuitive Living
Similar to intuitive eating, we’re never really done with intuitive living. Connection to your home is a process.
Intuitive living is about listening to your inner guidance and making decisions that align with yourself. It’s about being mindful and present and allowing yourself to live in a way that feels authentic.
Here are some questions to ask yourself to see if you’re running your home in line with your intuition and values:
- What are you prioritizing?
- What are you avoiding?
- What do you need to vent about?
- What are some of your wins?
Think about your responses and let them guide you with areas you can improve on.
One of my favorite parts of intuitive living is romanticizing the small things and making everyday life feel special in your home. Here are my favorite home treats to do just that:
- Make a cup of tea
- Light a candle
- Cook a yummy dinner
- Read a book
- Have people over
- Paint your nails
- Tidy up the kitchen before bed
- Plant flowers
I have 3 recommendations to get you started with intuitive living in your home:
- Prioritize people and relationships in your home
Tip: Connect with others
- Add more joy to your life
Tip: What is one hobby you’d like to have
- Your home is what you make of it
Tip: Have an attitude of gratitude
Just like body size, our home isn’t about aesthetics. It’s what you make of it. We all have a choice whether we are grateful for what we have or have negative feelings about it. Be grateful for where you are now.
