I just spent the weekend at FNCE – the largest conference for Registered Dietitians, our “Superbowl”!
I was honored to be selected to speak with Dr. Alexis Conason on Binge Eating Disorder, and also got the opportunity to highlight Pursuing Private Practice, which offers training and coaching to dietitians, at the Product Member Marketplace!
As a side note, I got to hear how everyone loves my new Pursuing Private Practice podcast and that made me so happy. I love that the show is making a difference in the lives of so many dietitians! And many clients have told me they love it too – thank you!
The Evolution of Intuitive Eating
Throughout my career, I feel very lucky to have had a few important moments that I feel really changed my life, both personally and professionally. At FNCE this year, I had another one of those moments. And NO – it wasn’t my experience of being on stage, although that was pretty amazing 🙂
My life-changing moment is when two of my idols, Elyse Resch and Evelyn Tribole, spoke about Intuitive Eating. For the first time on the FNCE stage together, Evelyn and Elyse spoke about the evolution of Intuitive Eating and what every dietitian needs to know.
The room was packed, my guess is that at least 2000 dietitians were there! It was standing room only with many people sitting on the floor.
Why was the room so packed? (And by the way, this session was at 8am!)
Dietitians WANT Intuitive Eating in our Profession.
I believe that dietitians have come to a realization that weight-loss diets do not work. In fact, most of us know that diets do harm. Focusing on weight as a measurement of health is not healthy. But I think there are also many dietitians who don’t know there is another way to practice and work with clients.
And this is where Intuitive Eating comes in.
Intuitive Eating is a philosophy rooted in instinct, emotion, and thought. There are 10 principles of Intuitive Eating that teach a person how to heal their relationship with food, creating trust and connection with the body. Intuitive Eating is weight-inclusive and Health at Every Size-aligned. I personally believe in the power of Intuitive Eating and have used the principles in my work as an eating disorder dietitian for many years. I absolutely believe Intuitive Eating is life-changing for so many clients.
Evelyn and Elyse talked about new research with Intuitive Eating, how Intuitive Eating is Health at Every Size-aligned, and gave an overview of the principles and how they work in all areas of dietetics (including medical nutrition therapy). Big news: They announced a 4th edition of the Intuitive Eating book is coming out June 2020!
Many FNCE moments gave me chills when I think about the future of our profession!
